Description
Technical Principle & Overview of Cobalt Chromium Molybdenum Alloy
In demanding biomechanical or extreme industrial environments, conventional stainless steels or titanium alloys may not have enough wear resistance or corrosion fatigue. CoCrMo alloy (typical composition: 58-65% Cobalt, 27-30% Chromium, 5-7% Molybdenum, controlled Carbon: 0.02-0.35%) forms a dense, self-passivating Cr2O3 oxide layer with excellent pitting corrosion resistance in chloride-rich and body fluid environments. Its unique strain-induced gamma(fcc) --> epsilon(hcp) phase transformation during cold work/sliding contact leads to a significant surface work-hardening, resulting in the alloy having an outstanding abrasive wear performance that is unmatched by 316L stainless steel.

PETROL STEEL’s medical grade CoCrMo is manufactured by vacuum induction melting and vacuum arc remelting (VIM+VAR) or electroslag remelting (ESR) in order to decrease the level of interstitial elements (O, N, S ≤ 30ppm) and non-metallic inclusions, which ensures both the homogeneity and traceability according to ISO 5832-4/ ASTM F75.

The technical attributes & the verified industrial values of ASTM F799 / F1537 CoCrMo Alloy
Principal Applications of CoCrMo
Orthopedic Implants Femoral heads, acetabular cups, tibial trays, spinal fixation rods (ASTM F75 / F1537)
Dental Restorations: Porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM) copings and frameworks because of compatible CTE with dental ceramics
Industrial wear parts: Valve trim, pump sleeves, nozzles, extrusion dies exposed to abrasive slurries + corrosive media
Aerospace / High-Temp Components: Selected high-W variants (CoCrW / ASTM F90) used in gas turbine combustion zones.
Advanced Material ResearchBenchmark biomaterial for comparison to novel high-entropy/medium-entropy alloys
